Healthy High is DRUG ARM's annual major fundraising event. The purpose of the event is to generate proceeds from participants to benefit DRUG ARM Australasia's Street Outreach Services (SOS), a non-government funded service that has been operating in Brisbane since 1989. For 21 years, DRUG ARM's mobile support team of dedicated staff and volunteers have been helping thousands of homeless and youth on the streets, particularly those who are at risk of harm from drug and/or alcohol misuse.
During their evening and early morning patrols, DRUG ARM's SOS volunteers provide a friendly chat over tea, coffee, Milo, biscuits or soup to clients who often feel isolated and helpless. DRUG ARM also provides referrals to clients who are looking to access job agencies, accommodation or health service support (includes mental health support), as well as providing fact sheets and offering DRUG ARM's treatment services where appropriate. DRUG ARM's outreach includes a specially equipped mobile health van that patrols specific Brisbane areas during the day on a weekly basis with allied health nurses. This mobile unit helps homeless clients, such as young mums who are struggling in their circumstance to access medical support. Their financial circumstance and the feelings of isolation and embarrassment can make it extremely difficult for them to access the public health system. DRUG ARM's presence in the community fills a gap to provide homeless or underprivileged individuals access to professional medical treatment in a comfortable and safe environment.
Without funding from major events such as Healthy High and without volunteer support, DRUG ARM's outreach services can not operate to help those individuals and families on the streets who need DRUG ARM's services the most.
Healthy High encourages adults to give up alcohol for a period of ten days between midday 18 June to midday 28 June 2010. By not consuming alcohol during the ten days, adults are given the opportunity to experience the health benefits of an alcohol free lifestyle and are encouraged to undertake healthy activities that do not involve alcohol or drugs. Healthy High participants will seek donations from friends, family and work colleagues to support them in their challenge to fundraise for DRUG ARM's Street Outreach Services.
